Wool and nylon want a milder pre-spray than polypropylene, so we check the fibre before mixing anything. In shoes-off homes the soil gathers at doorways and along set paths, and that is where the extra passes go.

Carpets in Southall homes
Most of UB1 and UB2 is Victorian and Edwardian terrace, and a good share has been extended at the back or converted in the roof. A loft conversion normally adds a second, narrower flight, so we ask about it on the phone and price it as a flight of its own. With several generations under one roof, a Southall living room takes more feet in a year than the same room would in a quieter borough, and the pile shows it by the sofa and in the doorway.
Shoes come off at the door in most homes here. Soil therefore gathers in narrow lanes and on thresholds instead of spreading across the floor.
