Working in Southall

The bulk of UB1 and UB2 is Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, much of it extended to the back and converted in the roof, alongside interwar semis on the Dormers Wells and Norwood Green fringes. Occupancy is high and households are frequently multi-generational, so living rooms and stair carpets take far heavier footfall than the same house type in a neighbouring borough. The redeveloped gasworks site has added a large block of new apartments with a different, harder-wearing floor mix.

Southall Broadway is congested most of the day and effectively gridlocked on Saturdays and around evening prayers, so morning slots and side-street loading off the Broadway work better.

Very high spice and cooking-oil use means airborne grease settles into hallway and stair carpets, which is why standard hot water extraction often needs a pre-spray degreaser here.

Shoes-off households are the norm, so soiling concentrates in defined traffic lanes and around door thresholds rather than uniformly across a room.

The water here is hard, which makes no difference to the extraction rinse. What slows drying in these houses is closed trickle vents, so we open windows while we work.

Areas we cover

We work across Southall and the streets around it. These are the areas we get to most.

Norwood Green

UB2. South of the Grand Union Canal, quieter and greener with larger semis around the green.

Hanwell

W7. East across the Brent valley, another Elizabeth line stop and the Wharncliffe Viaduct.

Yeading

UB4. North west across the Yeading Brook, mostly interwar and post-war estates.

Hayes

UB3. West along the Uxbridge Road and the Elizabeth line towards Hayes and Harlington.

Greenford

UB6. North east up Greenford Road, in the same borough.

Northolt

UB5. North of Yeading, reached via Kingshill Avenue and the A312.
